Mark and Shy came to us with a vision for a home sound intelligence system – a hardware microphone paired with an AI-powered mobile app.

EXPLORATION

Founders suggested an idea for data visualization:

A tree, where the most frequently heard sound categories would grow into its thickest branches.

We felt it was a bit too complicated. We wanted something that could be read at a glance.

We thought of translating sound into color – and explored four directions to find the right form.

Sound is invisible. Color is instant. Where the tree asked you to read, colors let you feel.

Mark and Shy said yes immediately. From there we started working on early concepts.

Early concepts

Three early concepts, each exploring a different stage of the app.

Onboarding. Users sliding sounds – teaching the app what their home feels like.

Sound details with
a 15-second recording, ready to play back.

Home. A gradient showing the current state above a timeline of everything recorded that day.

Final product

The gradient made it through. The logic behind it evolved.

The final product recognises sounds first – eight categories, each with its own colour.

Harmony and dissonance become a layer on top: familiar sounds contribute their category colour to the gradient. Abnormal ones add black.

The onboarding doesn't explain the app – it demonstrates it.

Single category view. The gradient shifts to reflect only that sound type.

Home. Quick stats, a timeline and a gradient that says it all.

Customize. Allow sounds when at home, send push about them when away.

Categories. Filter sounds by type and recording device.

Full control over sound notifications – by type and category.

Sirn launched in the middle of 2024. Shortly after, it was acquired. It's one of my favorite things I've ever designed.
